Today I met up with my new friend Katy for lunch at her place. She made us tartines, which is French for toast with shit on top. It was a good lunch, though, and after that she offered to take me to Monoprix, a supermarket. We walked to Montparnasse, where there is a HUGE Monoprix. I bought some cookware and a lot of food.
I was very, very surprised with the quality of the food at the supermarkets here. It’s like shopping at Whole Foods, but way cheaper! Their “deli meats” are so high quality, and about the same prices as in the States. I got a huge case of sticker shock, though, because the produce is sold by the kilo, so you see tomatoes going for €8/kg, which sounds expensive but is about the same I pay at Shaw’s back home. I bought stuff to make dinner tomorrow for Katy and Karine (another intern); I’ll be making chicken, potato gratin, and salad. I also got a ton of cheap cheese and some cheap wine.
Of course, I bought more than I could carry back. Typical me. When I get to the register, I discover that I needed to weigh the produce downstairs and put a price sticker on it, since the cashiers don’t do it like in the States. I had to go back down and some impossibly gorgeous guy weighed my shit for me. (Seriously, he was so babeful, he took my breath away. I couldn’t even look at him. I can’t stand all the gorgeous men here.) When all was said and done, I’d spent €120, which is a lot, but… I bet it’s cheaper than buying breakfast and dinner every day.
Tonight, Katy, Karine, and I are going to the Quartier Latin for drinks!
first time today, which was AMAZING, right down
